Are you tired of hiding your dirty little secret–er–sweatpants, from the world? Does your quest for comfort leave you grabbing the same old yoga pants and hoodie every day, so that your dressy yoga pants stay clean if you need to make an emergency trip to the store? Do you secretly pray no one comes to the door and sees your messy bun not getting stuff done? Are you instantly skeptical of style bloggers that describe their skinny jeans as “comfortable?”
Then you, my friend, might just be a hot mess mom and you are in good company. Days spent with small children can be dark. Who wants to get dressed into something uncomfortable, when they’re crawling around on the floor all day, covered in spit up?
But on the other hand, who wants to show up at doctor’s appointments or school drop off covered in that very same spit up?
I can’t promise you less spit up. I CAN promise you clothes every bit as comfortable as your booger-stained Alma mater hoodie that wont make people think you’re a vagabond.
I don’t want to brag or anything, but I did come up with a highly scientific formula for getting dressed in the morning that can get you out of any fashion emergency.
By making simple substitutions in your wardrobe, you can put together outfits that are stylish enough to gain real complements (“you look so cute!”) versus the backhanded ones (“wow, you look comfy…”) but you’ll still be every bit as comfortable.
So if you’re tired of describing your style as “didn’t realize I’d have to get out of the car,” come along and we’ll address the top offenders in our wardrobes and how to break up with those sweatpants, the painless way!
Hot Mess Mom #1: Still Wearing Clothes from College
I’m SUPER guilty of this one. The only thing that snapped me out of it was realizing that, post-baby, low rise flares do not contain the newfound jiggles of motherhood. Enter: The tomgirl style jean.
To be clear: the tomgirl jean is the only jean I trust. It’s a higher rise and slightly baggy throughout. It still gives you a defined shape, but without cutting off circulation like skinny jeans. If you’re really stealthy, you’ll be able to find a sweater so comfortable, you won’t feel the need to switch it out for a hoodie later on. I’m a huge fan of American Eagle’s Soft and Sexy line, because the name holds true for everything they make. Super soft, but no frumpy.
Hot Mess Mom #2: Athleisure Done Wrong
Can you keep a secret? This outfit here is my absolute go-to and the one I find it hardest to break up with. Luckily, the formula is simple: swap out all yoga pants for leggings.
Its that easy. Leggings are nothing new, but they provide a tailored shape that yoga pants just can’t compete with. My favorite pair of thick leggings that are super affordable can be found here. I love that they come in a long length and are a really high quality, especially for the price. Just be sure to SIZE UP!!!
Be sure to switch out your old zip up hoodie for something more stylish, like this one from Old Navy. I thought I was just going to be wearing this thing to the gym, but it’s so cute and form fitting (in the good way) that it’s my go-to for running errands. I love that, even with freakishly long arms, the sleeves are still a perfect fit!
My absolute favorite shirt to wear with leggings is this one here! It is literally a sweatshirt and comfy enough to sleep in. I sized up to a medium to make it long enough to wear with leggings. Add some cute boots and you are totally ready for those unexpected trips out of the car. 😉
Hot Mess Mom #3: Sweat Pants
Please don’t do it. Just don’t. Make this ensemble your painting clothes, like I did. There is a better way. What if I told you some beautiful, evil genius made sweatpants trendy? They’re called joggers. Get them. Now.
Do you see what I’m doing in this photo? Wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt. THE SAME THING I WAS WEARING IN THE BEFORE PHOTO! What new devilry is this?! Joggers. If you were skeptical of them, get over it now and get them in your life. I love this pair so much I bought them in black, too. I think the trick to joggers is to balance them with a more fitted top, and when it’s cold I like to throw a cozy cardigan on top.
So guys, what do you think? Totally doable, right? I swear, once you discover the magic of true comfort in a semi-stylish way, you will never go back to yoga pants and sweats again–at least not in public. 😉
